Area 31

Not to be confused with the 2017 light & sound prop Area 31 Capsule.

Area 31 was one of the two themes created by Spirit Halloween for the 2017 Halloween season. It resembled a research facility in a desert. It featured lighting, fencing, and a tunnel that could be walked through. The back section featured multiple rooms and light-up hand scanners that could activate animatronics.

Trivia[]

Originally this theme was meant to go along in style with the Spirit Hollow front display and would’ve been a “Cabin in the Woods”. The subsequent alien props and animatronics that were added to the 2017 lineup however forced a redesign of the theme as the props would not work well with the previous design.
- According to its creator, the redesigned Area 31 theme was designed in only three days, making it the fastest-designed theme.
If you look up by the saucers, you can see a "scene setter" that displays something along the lines of a desert. This sort of thing was only used two other times; in Last Chance Gas, and on the sides of the Dead Harvest Farm House, in locations with higher ceilings only.
The name and display "Area 31" is a parody of "Area 51", a U.S. military base in Nevada that supposedly houses a crashed alien spacecraft. It has long been speculated that bizarre experiments take place there.
The "31" in "Area 31" represents October 31st, Halloween.
The tunnel used for the entrance was similar to the Zombie Wasteland version (but half the size, and lighter in color).
Two Foot Pad Activator s were placed on top of each other in-front of Electrified Corpse and Brown Jumping Spider. The jumping spider would be hidden behind the sign so when customers stepped on the activator, both would activate and the spider would jump to reveal its presence.
